My wife is the reason why I got into woodworking. It all started with a simple request. “I want a coffee bar,” she said. My response was, “what’s a coffee bar?” My wife was quick to inform me that it was an area to brew your coffee. I did a quick google search and found some examples. The coffee bars that were for sale were either too large or too small for the spot we picked out. I figured, “I’m handy enough, I could certainly build my own.” A little bit of searching on the web and I found plans to build a table on Etsy. The plans were a perfect fit for our coffee bar location. I decided that I’d build this coffee bar for my wife as a Mother’s Day gift. This was my first time building a piece of furniture. Once I finished it was time for the big reveal. My wife was extremely impressed with her gift, and I couldn’t have been happier. Shortly after building the table, I had an idea to build a custom shelf with custom lights that would pair with the table. The reaction from my wife was great again. I decided to post some photos on Facebook and received a lot of positive feedback. Keep in mind, this was my first time building anything. I thoroughly enjoyed building that piece for my wife. Her positive reaction to my work encouraged me to venture out and try building other things. First, it was a ladder shelf for a bathroom. Next, it was an entryway bench for the foyer. Then, it was a lamp. I kept on posting photos of my latest creations on Facebook and the positive comments kept coming. Eventually people started contacting me to build furniture for them. It was at that moment I had an idea. Maybe this talent I discovered could be turned into a career. I decided to take this idea and turn it into reality. It was my wife that helped me discover this hidden talent. It was friends and family that convinced me to start Woody Mammoth Woodworking.
